A Note on Completing Supplemental Essays

Supplemental essays appear deceptively shorter and simpler – but they require as much care and attention as the main essay! Often students leave these essays to the last minute, write generic answers to the prompts, or don’t dedicate enough meticulousness to the research and responses. Do not underestimate these supplemental essays. Do not be fooled into simplistic, generic writing because of the smaller word count or the prompt.

Speaking of prompts… Typically, the supplemental essay prompts can be as broad as “Why are you interested in this major at ______ university?,” or more specific as “If you could invent one thing, what would it be?”  Either way, they require definite strategy and research – especially if students are applying to many schools. Too often students can write in such a generalized manner that their responses could apply to any school. This is a mistake that should be remedied.
